Redgame's Super Sexy Anime Review Hour - Great Teacher Onizuka

By Redgame
Hey everyone, and welcome back to Redgame's Super Sexy Anime Review Hour, I'm Redgame of course and I will once again bring you another popular anime. That being....

GREAT TEACHER ONIZUKA

Synopsis: Animated by Studio Pierrot
and based on the manga by Tohru Fujisawa, Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) is about Eikichi Onizuka, a former member of a biker gang, and his quest to become the greatest teacher in Japan. Onizuka decided to pursue his teaching career to try picking up a random chick one day, only to be turned down as she later on went on a date with an older teacher, seeming to be madly in love with him. This provoked Onizuka to think that chicks dig teachers, and thus he decided on becoming a teacher himself. The comedy usually involves Onizuka weaving his class into his crazy plans, getting outsmarted by them, rivalry with the school's vice-principal, and trying to get a female teacher he likes to hopefully date him. Throughout the series, Onizuka teaches his students some meaningful lessons.

Character List:

All the characters names have been flipped (last name first, first name last) to show how the Japanese do their bios of characters, exceptions to this are Onizuka and the vice principal!

Eikichi Onizuka: A twenty-two year old blonde-haired, virgin; ex-biker who gets into the teaching career due to the event mentioned in the synopsis. The fact remains that the school likes his "teaching methods"; regardless of the opposing fact that the vice principal himself hates Onizuka. Eikichi is also a pervert and usually acts like a dumbass.

Fuyutsuki Azusa: A female teacher that started teaching on the same day that Onizuka did. Onizuka has a crush on her and at various times tries to make moves on her; usually by involving her in one of his crazy plans.

Vice Principal Hiroshi: One of the vice principals at the school Onizuka teaches at. He hates Onizuka with a passion and most of the time tries to get him fired. His car is constantly wrecked by Onizuka in some kind of situation.

Kanzaki Urumi: One of Onizuka's students. She is a genius with an IQ of 200 and usually likes to show it off by outsmarting Onizuka and the other students with her own plans and various knowledge of things and such.

Yoshikawa Noboru: The class wimp. When he met Onizuka he was in a suicidal mood due to getting picked on all the time because of his height and 'wimpiness'. While trying to commit suicide, Onizuka saved him and showed him how to stand up to people, thus breaking him out of his suicidal thoughts.

Kikuchi Yoshito: A computer whiz, also a student in Onizuka's class. Due to Onizuka being a new teacher, he edited some sexual photos with his face on them. So to put simply, he pawns at Photoshop. He soon gives Onizuka respect and stops picking on him, eventually joining any plans that Onizuka cooks up. He gets along with Urumi pretty well.

Muri Kunio: Yet another student in Onizuka's class and another member of Onizuka's school gang. Like everyone else, He did not respect Onizuka when he first started teaching. Later on he changes his opinion and shows Onizuka more respect while simultaneously joining the group.

There are much more characters in the anime than listed here. Watch the anime to find out about the rest.

Thoughts

Art/Visuals:
I thoroughly enjoyed the facial expressions of Onizuka, but other than that the show falters in animation. Every once in a while, horrifically bad CGI will intrude, and in general the character designs are unappealing and somewhat ugly. Motion is stiff or simply non-existent. Fortunately, the animation doesn't do anything to hurt the amazing storyline or characters.
4/5 R.G.S (Redgame Approval Stars)

Plot/Characters:
Onizuka, as mentioned earlier, is not only tremendously loveable, but downright inspirational. In addition to this, the students that he teaches are all well fleshed out. Though initially intensely unlikeable, the development over the course of the series is simply phenomenal. Watching each of these initially worthless individuals be converted to Onizuka’s way of thinking is a treat to behold. As for the plot, it's fantastic. It's funny and adds that great amount of drama when needed. Great job Mr. Fujisawa!
5/5 R.G.S - For Both

Voice Acting:
The voice acting is just plain hilarious for both the original Japanese and English, but in the good way mind you. All the voice actors did a terrific job at letting me get a good feel for their character. Both of Onizuka's voice actors were perfect fits for him especially.
3/5 R.G.S - For Both

Overall:
In my mind, this is one of the classics of modern anime, and will hopefully be enjoyed by future anime fans for years to come. If you haven't already seen it and are looking for an anime that is both hilarious and inspirational, I can't possibly recommend GTO to you enough.
Overall Score - 8.9/10

Well there you have it, My review on GTO, I'll see all of you fellow 'Otakus' later, I'm gonna go find that school that Onizuka teaches at and enroll. Hella' fun school here I come!
